Welcome to the PuristSPro Baselworld 2010 Report. Baselworld is a lot more difficult to cover than SIHH because it is bigger and broader. There were 292 watch brands, 40 jewellery brands and 124 ‘related’ brands at Basel this year. We would need a reporting team ten times bigger and staying twice as long to cover everything. Thus, this report is a succinct focus on the things that caught PuristS’ interest during the shorttime that we had. Thanks to our moderators (Marcus Hanke, Don Corso... more

I present my report on the watches presented at SIHH and in Geneva in January 2010. This year’s fair was excellent for two main reasons. One being the exceptional range of products and the other being the upbeat sentiment amongst participants. Though Richemont, which dominates runs SIHH, is still cautious, with CEO Johann Rupert making prudent statements, brands appear to be optimistic, judging by their new launches. Stronger brands especially, those with money and high brand equity, are aggr... more

Having just finished to write my interest for the most advanced chronograph watch presented by Jaeger-LeCoultre this year, I can also share with you another chronograph offer. If the Extreme LAB2 is a watch for confirmed watch nuts, here is an easier appeal for a broader audience. Jaeger-LeCoultre aims at positioning itself as the most inventive manufacture of high horology. In a world of marketing such positioning can often be doubtful but in the world of horology that we all here like and that fascinates us Jaeger-leCoultre may well be entitled to think so. The most inventive manufacture, so well, Jerome Lambert adds that it is not to the credit of the management, but essential to the 177 years of history of the "Grande Maison". For long it was inventive mainl... more

Nearly three years have passed since Jaeger-LeCoultre presented the Duometre a Chronographe. This extraordinary piece was the first of an expected series of interpretations of horology devices powered by two parallel barrels. As you may know now the two barrels power two separated wheel trains, each of them having its own function. In the Duometre a Chronographe one barrel and wheel train was used for indicating the time (hours, minutes and seconds) and the other was doubling the funct... more

Basel 2009: Jaquet Droz by Marcus Hanke During the past few years, Jaquet Droz always celebrated the Baselworld watch fair with a wealth of new models, including new designs and new complications. this year, however, it appears that the company pays a tribute to the economic crisis by keeping a comparatively low profile. Most of the novelties shown are new variants of existing models. Yet I have to state that when Jaquet Droz makes but a new variant, this is more interesting than completely new models la... more

Basel 2009: Rolex By Timm Delfs There wasn't too much news, technically speaking. The Geneva-based brand presented the Ladies' Oyster Perpetual Datejust Rolesor in the new size 36 mm and a diamond-set bezel. They come in either bicolor or white Rolesor, this being the name Rolex gives to a combination of steel and gold. The models are available either with Oyster or Jubilée bracelets equipped with the new massive folding clasps. Some of the watches... more
