Geneva week 2014: Urwerk – UR-210Y, EMC and more

Lets start with a big mistake. It was me who did it. Until now I looked at Urwerk as if they would produce watches and for several reasons they didnt get much of my attention. In fact they dont make watches, they create machines of desire. When I just had my first appointment with them in Geneva, I had the pleasure to talk to Martin Frei (artist, chief designer & co-founder of Urwerk) and one of their watchmakers (sorry, I am really bad when it comes to names). We had a very long conversation and only briefly about watches, to be honest. It was more about art, antiques, languages and the ...

BaselWorld 2013: B for Breitling, B for Bentley …

(B for Basel ... Berlin) … C for chronographs … Breitling is known for their chronographs, today and even more when we talk about vintage pieces. They didn´t always have their own movements but even than they have been very innovative. For example: Did you know that the first two-pusher chronographs came from Breitling? Patent-Nr. 105532 from 1923, for a pocket watch. Patent-Nr. 172129 & 175564 from 1934, for a wrist watch. Today we think it is something special to see a chronograph without two-pushers, ... ...

BaselWorld 2013: The Laurent Ferrier for travellers... (& more)

… or connoisseurs which ask for some additional spice. In the past travelling was an adventure … with lots of room for fantasies and even then additional equipment was needed. Today, travelling is less adventurous and less “heavy”. The equipment has to be heavy-duty, smart, light … all at the same time – Tumi, Rimowa, Samsonite … comes to my mind. Is there still room for style and some kind of romance? At least on the wrist it should be possible to travel in style and with some kind of romance, even today. ... ...

Basel 2013 - A small room with three brands, but four gentlemen - a report in three parts

… and even when they are quite different personalities … … they work, eat drink and sometimes even dance together - at least from time to time. What else do they have in common? All of them have been trained and worked in some of the best places in the industry and have great experience when it comes to haute horlogerie in general and highly complicated pieces in specific. At least three of them have “genetic endowments” from their families. (Groenefel; the young brothers with their parents) (Sarpaneva; father ... ...

DeWitt Novelties from Geneva 2013

One could say De Witt is still something like a "sleeper" brand, but one with strong DNA and passion for the detail. A passion for mechanics (especially vintage automotive), crafts (in general) which ask for outstanding skills and of course Art Déco. If you ever had the pleasure to meet Mr. De Witt in person you probably can imagine that one of the biggest challenges for the employees is not to be overwhelmed by his (almost) unlimited passion and creativity. For the company it is probably a strength and a ... ...

SIHH 2013: At the SIHH? What you miss if you don't go to the GTE

Although not with a long history like the SIHH or Basel the GTE "Geneva Time Exhibition" has grown to be a rendez-vous for small brands and Independents. In short everything that is interesting! The following is a quick fly-by (only 77 images). I asked each (almost all) exhibitor to show me the two watches they most wanted PuristS to see. As you can see I sometimes have problems counting and the order can only be described as chaotic. Enjoy! If this is not enough info for you, you will just have to stop by ... ...

Baselworld 2012: Patek Philippe 5204P!

The launch of a brand new split seconds chronograph wristwatch by Patek Philippe is a rare opportunity to discover not just a gorgeous watch but also the functioning of a mythical device among watch technique geeks! When Patek Philippe presented the new reference 5204P at Baselworld in 2012 it was not a full surprise. The launch of the new base calibre CH 29-535 late 2009 ( http://patek.watchprosite.com/show-forumpost/fi-11/pi-3467161/ti-561706/s-0/ ) and the following launch of the first man's watch using this "engine", the reference 5170J, at Baselworld in 2010 ( http://patek.watchprosite.co...

Baselworld 2012 - PuristSPro report: Ulysse Nardin

2012 - for Ulysse Nardin this is the first Basel fair without its energetic and charismatic leader Rolf Schnyder, who had passed away so suddenly in April 2011. As a consequence, many were uncertain about the company’s new course, some even predicted a decrease of impetus and innovation. Gladly, this year’s fair demonstrate the opposite: Aside personal loss and grief, nothing seems to have changed, regarding Ulysse Nardin’s energy devoted to innovative technologies, the presentation of new models, and the consolidation of existing lines. Mainly responsible for that is the continuity within the...

Baselworld 2012 - PuristSPro report: Breguet

by foversta A visit at the Breguet booth is a must-do for me at the Baselworld Fair. Year after year, it makes me understand the strategy of Swatch Group with its most prestigious brand and I can feel now the strong ambition behind. Several years ago, I had some difficulties to feel what was the global direction behind the projects but now, things are much clearer to my mind. The will from Swatch Group is to build with Breguet a strong watchmaking excellence pole involved in innovation and taking ...

Baselworld 2012 - PuristSPro report: Bell & Ross

by foversta The 2012 edition of Baselworld was very active for Bell & Ross, so active that the fuses had just been blown when I visited the booth. Hopefully, we could find a place with lights in order to be able to shoot pics of this new collection. We can split it into 4 parts: - Flight instruments - Military - Complications - Slight evolutions of existing models. Let's start with the flight instruments . These watches follow the same footprints than the Radar did before: they are inspired by flight instruments to propose unusual time displays. I will not tell you that these watches are "inno...

Baselworld 2012: PuristSPro report Harry Winston

by foversta After 4 days in Basel, I'm very happy to propose you my Harry Winston report. This report is a wrap-up of the novelties which were unveiled during the Fair but of course, I will come back to these watches later with dedicated posts. The good point about Harry Winston is the yearly presence in the collection of one of the most awaited watches: Opus. But we don't have to forget that the new collection offers us a wide range of novelties with more affordable prices or playing a different ...

Baselworld 2012: Patek philippe!

So the wait is over and all the 2012 novelties are revealed. Patek Philippe plays a very conservative card this year, but offers several very appealing new models. I'll come back later and in greater depth to the Patek Philippe novelty of the year, the 5204 split seconds perpetual calendar chronograph. For the time being let's have a rapid look at the new watches. So first is below the new 5204. The dial seems to be very white on the pics but it is supposed to be of silvery opaline colour. This new 40mm cased watch is traditional in terms of case form and chrono pushers, but the dial style and...

SIHH 2012: Visiting Laurent Ferrier's workshop!

Laurent Ferrier doesn't show his watches at the SIHH, but spending a few days in Geneva was a nice opportunity to visit the Laurent Ferrier workshop there and meet again the men behind this recently launched yet very respected brand. I had met already both Laurent Ferrier the man and the company at BaselWorld nearly two years ago. I had been largely impressed by the Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral at that time. I can easily say that Laurent Ferrier's taste in watches fits ...

SIHH 2012: The new Girard-Perregaux offerings!

There was one very bad piece of news this year at the SIHH. Girard-Perregaux will leave the SIHH in 2013 and will join Baselworld. At least we had marvellous watches to discover and try to forget! The most striking watch (IMVHO) proposed this year is a Laureato tourbillon with three bridges. We have already seen this straight bridges titanium a few years back. At that time the bridges were made in sapphire glass. The watch has been quite successful. This year the 10 piece limited edition shows blue spinel bridges. Here it is : gp.watchprosite.com /...

SIHH 2012: my choices in the new Jaeger-LeCoultre watches!

It was this year my 6th SIHH since I became a moderator and this year as every year as soon as I arrived at the SIHH I directly walked to the exterior windows of the Jaeger-LeCoultre exhibition to look at the novelties. I was very pleased with what I saw. I later realized that the two most appealing (to me) novelties where not even shown out there. I yet had to see them, or nearly. Nearly because the most important new watch for Jaeger-LeCoultre this year, not in volume of production but in capacity to struck all minds attending, is a watch I saw earlier in 2011 but was asked to forget at that...

Baselworld 2011: The big PuristSPro report -- Antoine Martin

Basel 2011 Novelty report Antoine Martin by Marcus Hanke While the brand “Antoine Martin” is absolutely new, the man behind it is already an oldtimer within the watch business: Martin Braun, developer and producer of complicated timepieces since thirty years, had earned an excellent reputation with the watches sold under his own name. Especially the “Eos” model, a watch with the astronomical display of sunrise and sunset, became his milestone piece. What happened then, was ...

Baselworld 2011: The big PuristSPro report -- Blancpain

Basel 2011 Novelty report Blancpain by Marcus Hanke So different can impressions be: At the sight of this year’s Basel novelties, my valued friend Magnus Bosse, long-time Blancpain intimate with many insights into the company’s traditions and decisions, lamented about a “swan song” of the well-known brand. Uninspired, techno-affine approach, no consistency - these are but a few of the conclusions drawn by Magnus and his co-author Oliver from the most recent launches by Blancpain. home.watchprosite.com (click on this link to access Magnus' and Oliver's article) For me, who had only superficial ...

Baselworld 2011: The big PuristSPro report -- Zenith

Basel 2011 Novelty report Zenith by Marcus Hanke If the hustle and bustle in Zenith’s booth can be taken as indicator for a good order situation, the business must be really good for Zenith. The booth was as active as a bee hive: even the counter, on which normally small meals and drinks are being served, was occupied by three sales agents who were eagerly presenting the collection to interested buyers. Somewhere in the middle of the activity, we found a small place to have a closer look at this year’s novelties. Among them were a handful of watches that I cannot show for now, since I have bee...
