Sorry to rain on your new Rolex Daytona parade.

Jul 23, 2016,09:41 AM

Every post on the new Daytona immediately refers to how hard it is/was to obtain it which means the wearers are Rolex posers - being more excited about having a scarce watch than the watch itself. If you could go out to a Rolex AD tomorrow and obtain one then the lust/excitment about it would wear off instantly. While the new Daytona is indeed very nice, the ref. 116520 will without question be more sought after as it retains the classic legacy looks which are connected to the heritage of the model. Newsflash to you posers; the buy of the century right now is the old Daytona, not the new one.

If this new Daytona would be

rated like Rober Parker rates wines, this would be like Chateau Pontet Canet 2009 & 2010. Just a 5th Growth Grand Cru making it relatively affordable but as fines as the some wines of the 1st Growth costing 5-10 times more. For me this is a 100/100 po...

automatic Patek chronograph, 5960A, 5960P, 5980/1A and 5975P aside... Rolex is not shy at all compared to those watches costing much more. Indeed, a terrific watch. Best, Kari

Really?

mmmm.....interesting. Coming from a Patek man. I\'m still waiting on mine....

I am dead serious.

The new Daytona is surely fantastic in all kind of activities. Even it the garden it looks good. Best, Kari ...

It does

Will be me swimming watch from next Thursday.

Last time in FE I had PP 5711 for the same purpose but in harder use Daytona beats it easily. Best, Kari

Splendid!

 By: Joepny : July 23rd, 2016-08:03
Looks great in the sun. I'm getting more & more convinced to go put my name down.

Congrats! This is going to be a very popular community watch here. Rolex did it right

 By: Clueless_Collector : July 23rd, 2016-08:29
this time for this Daytona, kudos to them. Rgds Raymond

I agree! [nt]

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-08:33

Congrats Kari!

looks great on your wrist! Love your pics of it Cheers Robin

It looks wonderful.

I think the white dial would form a perfect pair with my black 116520. Best. Christian ...

Sorry to rain on your new Rolex Daytona parade.

Every post on the new Daytona immediately refers to how hard it is/was to obtain it which means the wearers are Rolex posers - being more excited about having a scarce watch than the watch itself. If you could go out to a Rolex AD tomorrow and obtain one ...

The new Daytona is not unobtainable.

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-11:33
It's a bit difficult to get. But so is e.g. Nautilus 5711 - difficult but not impossible. Best, Kari

For me it's not an issue.

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-16:25
If the watch would be obtainable from all shops, this would have been on my wrist from 17th March. I have enough rare and limited watches. All of those I have bought just because of the watch - fu*k the rarity. Same with Daytona: the only reason to get it...

The absurd notion that this Daytona is hard to obtain is just silly

 By: Mostel : July 23rd, 2016-18:18
Maybe for a few months it may be... but they will be falling out of the trees as usual, shortly... if you love it for what it is, love it indeed, but don't pretend a Daytona is ever rare when still in production.

I do not know if you replied to me

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-18:23
but I have not claimed that Daytona would be rare nor hard to find. Naturally in the beginning of the production the shops will not be filled with these but let some time run - I'm sure Daytona will be a common watch. The only reason to get this watch is ...

It is rare and not easy to obtain..get over it :)

 By: christianch : July 24th, 2016-08:05
Why can't someone not enjoy being among the first to get it ? Nothing is really rare. With money even old daytonas are available..so what. I don't think that you can easily get one in a "few months". There is a 2+ years waiting list everywhere and rightly...

I did not put much effort to get the new Daytona

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-08:26
but Tudor Bronze has been a challenge. I did not manage yet even I tried from old friends in Europe plus AD in Hawaii. Wempe in Frankfurt said: "we have not seen it yet". Best, Kari

Every post, huh?

 By: vitalsigns : July 23rd, 2016-11:11
Well except the original post in this thread, which said nothing about how difficult the Daytona is to obtain. Not very friendly to barge into a thread and start labeling owners as poseurs. Presumptuous and out of line.

True. I did not want to discuss how difficult Daytona is or is not to get.

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-11:38
In 2006 Patek 5960P was very difficult to get. Now it sells 2nd hand with great prices. This happens with every new great watch and I do not find discussing it too interesting. Best, Kari

The watch is surely very well made, just like every Rolex, plus

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-11:51
the movement is great. With one Patek 5980 one could buy some 3.5 Daytonas. It makes Daytona a great purchase. Best, Kari

Agreed. There is value here against the competition.

 By: vitalsigns : July 23rd, 2016-11:56
And especially against alternatives well outside the Daytona\'s price range.

I have discussed the movement with some watchmakers and

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-12:54
added to that a visual inspection makes me to think that Daytona represents really good value. Just compare e.g. with ROO... Best, Kari

vitalsigns agree

 By: Mostel : July 23rd, 2016-18:20
poseurs comment is totally uncalled for

Thanks [nt]

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-18:24

I totally agree...arrogance of some has no limit

 By: christianch : July 24th, 2016-08:06
even if he said that it was difficult so what? It is difficult to obtain why can't people get over this ? I am totally happy for Kari BTW I was among the first in the waiting list not because I am special but because I reserved it early on. So many people...

One friend from Watchprosite

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-08:32
placed himself to the waiting list on 16th March and offered the watch to me. But I had easier access. Best, Kari

how inappropriate...so you are not a poser or just a jealous non-poser?

 By: christianch : July 24th, 2016-08:03
I think the original post that called Kari a poser has been removed now but.. This was totally inappropriate. How do you know that he's not enjoying the watch ? it is a difficult to get watch yes, but with patience everything is possible. Totally not true...

+1 [nt]

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-08:21

Thank you Ovi!

Kari

Enjoy this one.

 By: vitalsigns : July 23rd, 2016-11:21
I\'m still not convinced by it yet (haven\'t seen it in person yet), but it certainly has merits. Cheers, John

This new watch is nothing else

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-11:45
but the old one plus ceramic bezel. Anyhow, that is a major improvement. Best, Kari

Does it still feel like a tool watch?

 By: vitalsigns : July 23rd, 2016-11:53
The bezel is cool, indeed, but it now has much more flashiness. Rolex crossed over to more flashiness in a big way with the post-Zenith Daytona.

I do not see it like that.

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-12:52
The metal bezel was very sensitive and prone to scratches. This new ceramic bezel can take a lot of punishment and thus, Daytona has lost nothing from its tool watch characteristics. Best, Kari

+1

 By: MTR : July 23rd, 2016-13:02
FRIENDLY - - congrats and many intensive, joyful hours with your beautiful new acquisition! Best, Thomas

I was considering only aesthetics

 By: vitalsigns : July 23rd, 2016-13:04
The polished bezel was very flashy before, IMO. Maybe moreso with the ceramic bezel? The black subdial surrounds of the new Daytona are much better than the silver ones on the prior version.

Speaking about aesthetics:

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-13:12
the new one is fantastic! And the bezel is not any shiner that the same of Submariner. Best, Kari

This slow but constant development

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-22:28
is what makes me to respect Rolex so much. Best, Kari

Looks very cool on your wrist Kari

I hope to get mine asap, i don't even know the color... Cheers, Chris

Congratulations on a great find

 By: jim_94104 : July 23rd, 2016-14:55
may I ask how much, if any, did Rolex raise the price on this vs the prior version?! Thx in advance.

I do not know the price of the old version

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-15:39
but I think around 500 euro. Anyhow, even with the current price Daytona represents great value. Best, Kari

That is very fair, i think

 By: jim_94104 : July 23rd, 2016-16:10
Congrats and thx again!!

The pricing of Rolex is quite sensible

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-17:47
and I think it will secure their success. Best, Kari

True. I bought four different 2010 wines

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-15:42
of 100 Parker points and indeed, Pontet Canet is of great value just like Daytona. I do not know where to place 2010 Ch. Petrus in the watch world... Best, Kari

Kari you should give the Platinum version a try if you love this steel one

 By: descartes1 : July 23rd, 2016-17:26
Or perhaps not if you want to avoid temptation. To me it\'s one of those "I have to have this" pieces.

I try to avoid the temptation.

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-17:46
I guess I have enough platinum watches for one guy: the count of my #1 brand shows two digits. More are hardly needed... Furthermore, I am not convinced about having "tool" or sporting watches in platinum. Best, Kari

No, I have not.

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-03:15
The ice blue dial is tempting while I do not get the brown bezel. They make a funny colour combination. Best, Kari

new white gold with blue dial thou but I know you don't like blue dials a lot or rightly think that are just fashion ..I agree but I might still try to get the WG blue dial because it looks amazing

Now we speak...

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-08:28
I do not like blue dials too much. Normally. But I have asked from "my Rolex supplier" for an offer for the very same Daytona. Best, Kari

I will! [nt]

I have to confess:

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-15:04
I have some serious issues with platinum watches. Last year I was offered Patek 5711P. After long consideration I refused and regretted (a little bit) afterwards. I refused because I can't find one good reason why a sporting watch should be made of platin...

Platinum

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-15:31
is so very prone to scratches and sometimes it's unnecessary heavy. I can't decide if I like more my 5960A or 5960P. For sure, the steel version (now with strap) is a nicer watch for every day use. Best, Kari

The quality of each and every Rolex is magical

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-15:46
But in my opinion the steel version is more practical. And much cheaper. Best, Kari

Thanks a lot. [nt]

Kari, curious about your preferences for 116520 steel bezel and 116500 ceramic bezel

 By: patekova : July 23rd, 2016-18:47
But first and most important congratulations on acquiring a great watch. And for the money a watch that is even better than great! You mentioned that you might like to acquire a now discontinued steel bezel 116520. Of the 4 Rolex movement steel Daytonas 1...

Actually I'm thinking acquiring 16520

 By: dr.kol : July 23rd, 2016-22:22
but that's not sure. I do not really need another watch and I'm at the moment very happy with my new Daytona. Best, Kari

I have been searching if ceramic bezel assembly...

 By: redcorals : July 24th, 2016-05:16
...is similar to the steel one. Not much info out there yet except this one has done it... If true and the construction is similar/interchangeable it wud be a win-win situation picking up either one

I know absolutely nothing about that

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2016-05:29
but knowing something about the trade, I can't believe the bezel can be changed. Best, Kari

Congrats on your new acquisition Kari!

 By: Horologically_minded : July 24th, 2016-05:29
And thanks for sharing photos of this lovely watch! J

I haven't seen it in the metal yet

 By: Horologically_minded : July 24th, 2016-05:43
But from what I hear, the ADs are charging quite a large premium (60% in one case) over the list price. I'm definitely not in that much of a hurry

Kari looks great on you...true luxury can also be affordable yet this is more...

You'll get it; sooner or later. Don't worry.

And like the Pontet Canet cost to quality relationship. My cellar is jammed with 09&10 PC. 09 Baron Pichon-Longueville is underrated and so is the black dial Daytona. I couldn't get definitive answers from my AD's but I suspect the request for white/b...
