Basel 2008 Report: Gerald Genta
Text: Dr. Bernard Cheong, pictures and captions: Don Corson

Well, risking the wrath of the good people who like their watches to be "chronometers", " fine instruments of traditional craft" and etc etc..

Genta is all about creating a new horizon, whether the Horological collectors who like the traditional Patek/Omega/Breguet/Lange are ready for it or not.

I know Roden is not about HooHah, and not about fashion..but he understands art.

Certainly the Genta are not for the majority of people, and in fact..these are probably meant for the tips of the bell shaped curve.

They should not be misunderstood for being flashy, attention getting pieces, which they are in essence...but it is so because they are just different.

Examined carefully and with an eye for (1) Volume and weight, one will notice that GG uses much of this technique in their watches..less so than visual perspectives. (2) The use of depth of color, rather than contrast of color (3) the use of polished edges at compound angles. So..not just wild wacky designs...but designs that will endure and age..and remain significant  IMHO.

There are many who would rather that a watch be a simply a good instrument for time...and easy to read, easy to tell the time that is.

BUT...telling the time, sometimes should not be easy..so that we "treasure it a bit more"....telling the time maybe should take (1) Some small conscious emotional effort and (2) stimulate the amygdala (emotional area), sub conscious.

If all our watches were well made with simple precision, they will be small, round, with a few hands...but all our cars will look like Porsches, Mercedes and Espaces..just 3 models.

The deep luster of that palladium bezel is exceptional IMHO.
