The little bit of history that Panerai has with Minerva
Nov 24, 2009,03:16 AM
Is not so much in the watch movement, unlike Rolex and Angelus, but is more in that Minerva used to supply parts that are critical in constructing timing devices that Panerai used to produce. ( I presume these are the bomb timers)
With the exception of 2 pieces that i hardly mention ( because i actually gave them to my mom, who incidentally is becoming quite hooked onto Panerai all because of her son's fault...), yes all my Pannies are 47mm and up.( or will be)
Anything smaller than that, and it really looks weird on me! I guess i'm one of those Asians who look really good in an authentically sized panny!
You should get one of their watches soon bro!
Cheers
Stephen

Oh yeah one thing I noticed is the PAM349 designation
By: AnthonyTsai : November 21st, 2009-09:29
At SIHH 2009, the PAM349 was supposed to be the PAM321 on bracelet. Panerai doesn't have this model listed on its website, so does this mean they did not make this PAM349 (PAM321 w/ bracelet) ? PAM321 And so, gave this PAM349 designation to this new 47mm ...

Is this a real picture? The numbers and markers on the dial don't look quite right to me. The 12:00 triangle marker in particular looks misaligned. Best, Jed
I love it
By: tourbillon001 : November 21st, 2009-11:38
will it be a piece that you have to be picked to buy? 12 pieces are not much to go around
Cheers [nt]

Just got confirm. The PAM349 is for real
By: AnthonyTsai : November 22nd, 2009-08:18
Also, I guess Panerai decided to use the PAM349 designation to help with keeping model #'s easy to remember. The PAM249 is the 47mm stainless steel Cali, so it's easy to remember that the PAM349 is the Ti Minerva version. There are just so many Panerai mo...
Lol, of course it's for real!

Anatheme! Blasphemy!
By: amanico : November 21st, 2009-15:33
Such a Cali never existed.... It is a massacre of an historical piece. Panerai should be ashame, IMO, to play with its History as they do. A total non sense piece, for me. Well, at 19 K Euros, I see the sense, now.... Best, Nicolas
The dial is one of the parts of this piece that will create controversy...
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-01:56
And while i do agree with your point Nicolas, could i try to persuade you in viewing this as a 21st century prototype? I mean take for example the case materials, one of the most popular materials for modern Pannies is their titanium ones. And titanium do...
BUT, Stephen, the Cali was unique
By: amanico : November 22nd, 2009-02:05
There was no other watch like the Cali. Touching an Icon is not a good idea, IMO. Then again, there are some contradictions to use a Minerva movement while you're claiming to be a Manufacture. Therefore, A proto with a NOS movement??? To me, it is just a ...
I agree with you on the part that the Cali being unique
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-02:49
It is a special piece, and you know i love my 249! I guess for me and Panerai, while I do respect and love their historical authencity very much, i also do not mind and infact welcome with great pleasure these sorta " modern" interpretations of their watc...
Sure hope you are enjoying your 322 Patrick!
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-08:31
This baby is a superb beauty to me, not only for the even more unique touch to an already hell of a unique dial, it's in black, which is what i believe all Pams should be in the 1st place! Cheers Stephen
Black dial for my 190; I also like this color.
By: patrickh : November 22nd, 2009-14:04
Brown is incredibly different. Both are very nice on a simple dial. Thanks to Panerai to create these so nice watches. Enjoy your nice collection Stephen. Cheers, patrick
The thing i don't appreciate the brown
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-20:16
Is that all PAMs are originally black, with some in blue, it's just their exposure to the sun and elements over the years turned them into brown! So even though nowadays the quality of the dial materials are way much better than back then, i'm sorta apply...
Really how unique was the California Dial....
By: Marc(Cap) : November 24th, 2009-13:22
It was on many other Rolex models from the 1940s...I have seen many other watch brands with it...while I associate it with Panerai it certainly wasn't theirs alone...yes I love the history of the 249 but what is wrong with building on it and giving it a m...

Rity!
By: BluNotte : November 26th, 2009-06:19
Best not to try to understand Panerai! You'll go mad!
Thats alright!
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-01:56
Many people are saying that now! Cheers Stephen
OMG, what next?
By: oldfogey691 : November 21st, 2009-21:43
Will there be a 449, perhaps a 47mm Tantalum or Platinum Tourbillon Radiomir with the Cali dial? At 150K Euro? Seems to be where they're headed.
Maybe! [nt]

Yes this will most likely happen
By: AnthonyTsai : November 22nd, 2009-08:29
Panerai only has the Luminor and Radiomir cases in current production, and Mr. Bonati told me in my interview with him several years ago that Panerai has so much more to grow using these 2 cases before even having to consider making a new case style. We h...
I love the way you are highlighting the REAL important bits!
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-08:35
Among those that you have listed, because i missed out on the 47mm Luminors of the past ( 127, 203, 217 and of course the elusive 267), I need and WANT a 47mm Luminor, and the Black ceramic 47mm base which i hope it should and will be is so so high on my ...
I just want everyone to know that future models of larger sizes
By: AnthonyTsai : November 22nd, 2009-08:43
smaller sizes or different metal combination ARE going to happen, so please don't bash Panerai for it. Producing these models is part of growing as a brand. I don't want to look like I'm defending Panerai and nothing bad gets to spoken about them, but I j...
Sure Anths, i for one am NOT going to bash Panerai...
By: BluNotte : November 22nd, 2009-08:57
Unless they go the opposite way, meaning smaller! Lol! But even then, i don't bash them, i know that they need to expand for the sake of the brand. As i am a collector of only historically correct sized models ( meaning strictly speaking only 47mm, 52mm a...
You mentioned history...
By: patrick_y : November 23rd, 2009-23:31
Does Panerai have an extensive history with movements supplied from Minerva? I'm only familiar of the history with movements supplied from Rolex. All of your Pannies are 47mm and up? Wow! Those are some big Panerais! Admittedly, I have difficulty wearing ...

I'll have to see about that... 47mm is a tad bit big for me...
By: patrick_y : November 24th, 2009-13:11
The Panerai 47mm watches are a bit large for me. I don't exercise as much as you do and I only have a 6.25 inch wrist. Gotta lift a lot more weights, what kind of weights does BluNotte use? Probably 10 kilos on each hand to wear a 47mm watch! This message...
You know what?
By: BluNotte : November 24th, 2009-18:47
I hardly exercise at all! And while i don't know how big your wrists are, i can guarantee you that my wrists are VERY small! Even the last hole in a strap usually is too big for me! That's why i have to custom make almost all my straps! And i definitely d...

By: patrick_y : November 23rd, 2009-23:28
I think it's good that Panerai continues to push the envelope. Panerai is one of the definitive brands that makes large watches, Panerai would naturally need to increase their size as other watch brands continue to increase their own sizes. Panerai should...
OP will have a 42mm in SIHH 2010
By: BluNotte : November 24th, 2009-03:11
Which i highlighted a few posts back. But indeed, i can only see Panerai doing more and more biggies, like i said if they were to stick to their history strictly, you wouldnt see anything less than 47mm! oH And the X1 looks so cute! Stephen
